In this program, I learned how to be an effective writer and communicator, with an emphasis on leadership, ethics, and organizational change.

My studies culminated in an integrative project, a heavily-researched 59-page thesis which “focuse[d] on utilizing background knowledge or skills developed throughout the [program], integrating evidence, applying critical thinking skills, and presenting a coherent and persuasive culminating academic paper.”

Consortium for Service Innovation

The holder of this credential understands the principles, core concepts, and practices of Knowledge-Centered Service (KCS). The holder knows how to integrate KCS into the workflow, including searching early and often, modifying articles, and creating new articles. The holder also understands the power of the double-loop process and the roles and activities involved in both the Solve and Evolve loops.


Advanced Public Information Officer

Emergency Management Institute (In-Residence), December 2007

Public Information Officers (PIOs) are key members of Incident Command System and Emergency Operations Center organizations. PIOs work closely with multiagency officials and advise the Incident Commander, Unified Command, and EOC Director on public information relating to incident management.

The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) PIO training curriculum courses covers awareness, basic and intermediate levels. Courses were developed by EMI and teach basic skills and techniques for use during small, localized, single-agency responses; preparedness campaigns; and escalating localized responses.The advanced level course teaches participants additional skills for use during escalating incidents, including strategic communications and incident action planning as it relates to Joint Information Center (JIC) operations.


Public Information Office Course (Basic)

This course equips participants with the skills needed to be full or part-time PIOs, including oral and written communications; understanding and working with the media; and basic tools and techniques to perform effectively as a PIO, both in the proactive / advocacy times and crisis / emergency response.
